Futures group not ‘bashers’
“It is extremely narrow’minded to call us'conservation bashers." the director of the newly-formed New’ Zealand Futures Group. Mr J. D. Huston, said yesterday. The new group arose from a public meeting in Whataroa this week, organised by West Coast Futures. Save Our South Westland, and the Westland Chamber of Commerce.
Mr Huston, a past-presi-dent of the chamber and a member of the board of the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce, said that the new group would develop nationally.
Mr Huston said there had already been invitations to speak at' other centres. He envisaged autnomous branches of the new organisation being established in several areas.
He said he knew of problems in such areas as MidCanterbury, Otago and Northland, “coupled with the distinct feeling of people wanting to do something about it."
“The preservation lobby is the problem,” he said. “For. the news media to say that we are anti-conser-vationist is a great disservice to us and to conservationists. We are here to counter the extreme preservationists.”
A budget of $250,000 was being considered, with subscription memberships.
