Truck on fire closes road
PA Wellington Spectacular fireballs from exploding flammable liquids and thick clouds of billowing black smoke closed the Ngauranga Gorge Road in Wellington to all traffic on Thursday afternoon when an articulated truck carrying chlorine gas. burst into flames.
The potential gas danger was averted when firemen saved the massive 920 kg cylinders from exploding. However, the cargo of paints, thinners, oil. yarn. ■ soap, shampoo, and toothpaste was destroyed in the fierce blaze.
The truck driver. Mr Robert Johnson, of Levin, was nearing the top of the gorge when he smelled smoke coming from the truck, owned by Capper's Transport. He tried to quell the fire with a portable extinguisher but was beaten back by the blaze. He was able to retrieve only his log book and documents.
