PA Wellington The president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. Mr lan Wells, has defended ' tobacco company sponsorship of sports events. He said yesterday that it was absurd to suggest, as Dr David Hay had recently in Wellington, that the national Davis Cup. cricket and

soccer teams battled it out on the sports field for the benefit of a tobacco company rather than the country. Without the sponsorship of cigarette companies a lot of New Zealand sports would not have been where they are today. Many youngsters would not have had the same opportunity to participate. Mr Wells said.
