Flights near volcano banned

NZPA Jakarta The Indonesian Government has banned aircraft from flying near the Galunggung volcano in west Java, which has erupted again, billowing hot smoke, ash and sand. The volcano's eruptions had been endangering flights in the area, said a Communications Ministry spokesman. The ban had been sent to flight controllers at airports throughout the world after an incident on Tuesday night when a Singapore Airlines Boeing 747 made an emergency landing at Halim Airport. Two of the aircraft's engines had shut off after sucking in volcanic ash and sand. In a related incident two weeks ago a British Airways 747 temporarily lost power in four all engines. The spokesman said that the ban, as from last night, would be' imposed indefinitely for safety reasons until the situation improved. In Seattle, a Boeing Company spokesman said that volcanic ash clouds should be monitored.
