Australian showdown today
NZPA Sydney The Australian Labour Party leadership showdown will' be decided today in Canberra with the result still up in the air.
Political observers in the Federal capital believed only a handful of votes would separate the current leader, Mr Bill Hayden, and his challenger, the confident Bob Hawke.
The leadership challenge had led to bitter factional infighting in the party between Left and Right elements, and the Labour disarray had led to further speculation that the Prime Minister (Mr Malcolm Fraser) could take advantage of the Labour division and call an early election.
