Family pet killed

Mrs Margaret Pipe and' Leanne Stack, aged 10, inspect the torn remains of Freckles, another victim of relentless attacks by dogs on sheep in farmland on the fringes of north-eastern Christchurch. ! About 16 sheep and two goats, have been killed or mauled by dogs in the North New Brighton-Burwood area in the last few weeks. Freckles and , another pet , sheep were attacked about 4

a.m. yesterday by a dog or dogs which harried them relentlessly round the property, tearing handful-sized pieces of wool and flesh. Freckles ended up a bloodied mess at the bottom of a swimming pool near the house, where it was found, “half-dead” yesterday morning, according to Mr Neil Pipe. The other sheep was found dead in a drain. “If people could see things

like this they might take more trouble to control their dogs," said Mr Pipe. He had heard of other savage attacks on sheep in ' the area; Any roaming dogs would be shot on sight, he said. The New Brighton police are also concerned about the problem. A Burwood farmer, Mr Jim Brown, recently shot a German shepherd which had killed or mauled 12 of his sheep. On a property in Mairehau ,Road, dogs killed one sheep and badly mauled an in-lamb ewe.
