Lawyer jailed for fraud
PA Auckland A partner in a Whangarei law firm sold client's money to finance his excessive gambling and a lifestyle far above his income, a judge said yesterday. Mr’ Justice Holland sentenced a former barrister and solicitor. Mark Joseph France, aged 33/ ■ to 18 months jail on 15 charges of fraud. France — struck off the roll of lawyers since he admitted the offences — had been committed to the High Court at Auckland for sentence after earlier appear-
ances in the District Court at Whangarei. Mr Justice Holland said that “quite remarkable testimonials" had been produced on Frances behalf. France had been assured of a good income as long as he was prepared to work, but had adopted a lifestyle far above his income and in order to sustain it. had stolen clients' .moneyjand gambled to excess, his Honour said. He said that France's conduct exemplified the behaviour of many young men . and women in today’s relatively
affluent and undisciplined society. France had not been willing to wait for the rewards of work to come later in his career. I
