13 workers to be laid off
PA Wellington Thirteen workers at the House of York wallpaper factory in Levin will be given notice of redundancy this week. The plant’s manager. Mr J. D. F. Davidson, said that the lay-offs were necessary because of a decline in demand for conventional wallpapers. He said management and the union were- seeking agreement on a redundancy package.
Mr Davidson said a substantial reduction in demand for more conventional types of wallpaper meant that two production units at the factory were under-used. Mr Davidson said the decision to lay off staff was regretted but the company had no' alternative. He said the decision was in the best long-term interest of the company and its employees. House of York has 68 staff at Levin.
Mr Davidson said they would be given until noon tomorrow to decide whether any members wanted to seek voluntary redundancy. "We have not got a list of names at present of 13 staff, but will draw up this list by 3 p.m. on Thursday taking into account any offers of voluntary redundancy, but we have' the final say. as of course we cannot afford to lose any key men who might possibly volunteer."
