Ice sends cars off road

Treacherous “black ice” sent several - cars off the road between Arthur’s Pass arid Otira yesterday, according to the chief ranger of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board/ Mr I. Blackmore. The ice was a result of light rain after a hard frost, then a slight thaw, and then another hard frost on Mon-

day night. “The road was just like glass,” said Mr Blackmore. Some vehicles had skated off and struck banks or gone over the side of the road, but none had been seriously damaged. No injuries were reported. The Arthur’s Pass highway remained icy last evening,

and motorists were advised by the Automobile Association to use chains. Ice was also a problem on some Central Otago roads. Water supplies in the Arthur’s Pass township have been affected by a series of heavy frosts of up to 15.3 deg. C.
