India’s hopes alive
NZPA-Reuter London The all-rounder. Kapil Dev, thrashed another 97 runs off the England bowling to keep alive India's hopes of saving the third and final cricket test, on the fourth day at The Oval yesterday. The . 23-year-old opening bowler thwarted England's hopes of making India follow on and then, in the late evening, grabbed the wicket of the opener, Geoff Cook, to leave England 214 runs on with one day in which to force victory. England needs quick runs in the opening session today if it is to have any chance of bowling out India a second time to secure a .2-0 win in the three-match series. Bad light, which prevented play until, early afternoon, severely limited England's chances but did not affect Kapil Dev — his 97 came off 93 balls and included two sixes and 14 fours. Sixteen runs came off one over from his England rival. lan Botham: By the time he was sixth out at 378 India was sure to make England bat again, although the last three wickets — the captain, Sunil Gavaskar, is absent with a broken leg — added only another 32 runs, bringing India’s total to 410 in reply to England’s 594.
