Chess upset

Papanui caused a big upset in the A grade of "The Press” schools’ chess competition when it beat the hitherto unbeaten Mairehau, - 3 1 /z-2V2, in the fourth round. Michael .Hampl signalled Papanui’s startling ■ success with victory on the top board and he was well supported by his team-mates in the higher order, who exceeded expectations against the competent Mairehau combination. Geoff Kennedy managed a half of board two, and wins by lan Chan, and John Edwards, on boards three and four, respectively, clinched Papanui’s win.
