Lead dangers

Sjr—The television item highlighting the problems of lead ingestion in children was a masterpiece of sensationalism. Edited from the commentary was a statement from Professor Shannon that not only did he have no children in hospital at the time with lead poisoning, but he had not had any this year. The factual evidence presented was a rehash of a paper written by Shannon and Shallcrass seven years ago. Seven years is not an unusual lag for the Health Department. All • the programme added was slender information on the new technique of sandblasting which might possibly work. Parents were left , with the impression that anyone who did not immediately sell their old leadpainted house would be bringing up a crowd of demented, constipated children. Television and the Department of Health have served us badly in this and one might wonder. what the' Department of Health is doing promoting programmes of this sort when the hospital system is in tatters and smog is at its worst—Yours, etc., W. ROY HOLMES. . July 6, 1982.
