Last day for relicensing today

Today is the last day before vehicle registration's and drivers' licences expire but many motorists in Canterbury still have not renewed their licences or procured the orange . relicensing sticker for their cars.

By last evening about 5000 motorists in the Christchurch metropolitan area still had to- renew their drivers’ licences and about 50.000 vehicles throughout the province required to be relicensed.

Mrs J. Shelling, of the driver's licence renewal section of the Ministry of Transport. said business had been brisk over the last two davs.

"We still have quite a few over-70s drivers to check and would like any of them to get in touch with us if they are unsure of the procedure and whether they will need to be tested again." she said. The Chief Postmaster in Christchurch. Mr N. J. Williams, said the number of vehicles to be relicensed was inflated by the fact that many farmers did not worry about relicensing their farm vehicles until they were needed, and many people with caravans ’waited until summer before they relicensed them.

"Apart from that we have been very, very busy throughout the district this week.” he said.
