Social welfare reviews

Sir,—One of your correspondents made the point that unemployment beneficiaries' are subject to more reviews and checks than other beneficiaries. Mr M. A.. Brown, of the Social Welfare Department (June .16) said this was a mistake and I question his reply. I believe the unemployed have to reapply completely for the benefit every six months not annually as was the implication in Mr Brown’s reply. If other beneficiaries are not subjected to a. similar renewal period I wonder if the system is fair and consistent.—Yours, etc WENDY JARVIS. June 18, 1982. [Mr C. R. F. Money, Assistant Director (Benefits and Pensions) Social Welfare Department, replies: “Although a six-monthly review of unemployment benefits is being considered, no advice has been given to districts confirming that there has been a change in the present policy of annual review.”]
