Use of L.P.G.
Sir,— The Minister of Energy, . Mr Birch states, (“The Press,” June 26): "Unreasonable organised opposition to the use of liquefied petroleum gas in Christchurch could jeopardise development vital to New Zealand’s future.” Not all this statement is factual. The Minister loses some credibility as far as Lyttelton is concerned. The L.P.G. petition, presented to the Government last year, and still not heard, states specifically: “While not being against the use of L.P.G.,” etc. The saga of L.P.G. at Lyttelton has similar implications to those which the Government is experiencing with the Clutha dam, at present. The Liquigas consortium and the Lyttelton Harbour Board are to blame for pursuing their ignominous policy to unload' L.P.G. in the inner harbour, and have lost all credibility. . Neither political expediency nor economic convenience can possibly r , justify overriding the voice of the people. The safety of people is of paramount importance at all times. — Yours, etc., STAN HEMSLEY. June 27, 1982.
