Heathcote council
Sir,—lt is very gratifying to see an attempt to right the inequality in representation in Waimairi. When, as a Heathcote councillor, I urged changes in undemocratic representation in Heathcote, I found Waimairi was, possibly,
even worse off. In spite of criticism of opportunity for discussing this major issue in Waimairi, residents there are now better off than their counterparts in . Heathcote. In Heathcote, the basic decision was made at a special council meeting called on Friday, June 11, Jor Monday, June 14.’ Six of eight councillors were present, and no media. Moreover. I believe that the committee studying representation and amalgamation has not yet reported its findings to the council. Will decisions in these areas also be made by councillors undisturbed by the public to be affected? Any change to right the inequality in representation suffered since 1963 could, of course, be progress. A fait accompli on amalgamation could be a different story.— Yours, etc., ' B. ROBERTS.
