Support called for high dam
PA Invercargill The chairman of the Clutha-Central Otago United Council (Mr T. J. Thomson) has appealed to members of Parliament to support legislation which would grant the water right needed to enable the building of a high dam on the Clutha at Clyde to proceed. "Surely nothing could be more calculated to undermine the confidence of the people in a region such as ours, than this sudden reemergence of instability in basic planning of a work of national importance and of enormous local significance." he said.
He said that locally the possibility of irrigation and other multi-purpose developments arising from hydroelectric development ' was seen as dependent on lowcost power production, which could occur only if scheme F — for a high dam — was confirmed immediately and construction continued to early completion. “If we now re-open the issues in further years of litigation, or revert to construction of low dams, the additional costs may well jeopardise the economic feasibility of many end uses the Planning Tribunal is required to consider.” said Mr Thomson.
