Simmental bull sold for $4200
Simmental breeders had every reason to be pleased with the South Island Simmental sale at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday. In spite of decreasing interest in the beef industry, demand for Simmental bulls were strong. All the 31 bulls were sold and averaged $2OOO each, compared with $1963 at last year's national sale.
Several bulls were bought by commercial beef farmers and others will go to studs. About 40 per cent of the bulls will go to Otago and Southland farms, although buyers from throughout the South Island. Hawke’s Bay, and two from Australia secured lots.
The top price of $4200 was paid for the entry of W. A. Rouse (Lumsden). The bull, which was •the champion Simmental bull at the Gore and Invercargill Agricultural and Pastoral shows last year, was bought by Mr John Canavan, of Victoria, Australia.
Mr Canavan is a Simmental stud breeder at Mansfield, and has purchased several Simmentals from New Zealand breeders during the last few years. He has successfully shown New Zealandbred bulls at the Melbourne and Sydney shows. Mr Rouse sold another bull at $2200. giving him an average of $3200
The Levels Farming Company. Ltd (Timaru), sold a bull for $4OOO to Guthrey. Holdings. Ltd (Amberley), and three others from $llOO to $2OOO for an average of $2lOO. D. C. and M. J. Carter (Lyttelton) sold bulls at $3700. $2400 and $l6OO, and O. J. Osborne (Christchurch) sold two at $2400 and $2300.
R. W. Gibson (Tarras) received $3400 for one bull and Nirs A. W. Duncan (Lumsden) sold bulls at $3OOO, $llOO and $lOOO.
Six female Simmentals were sold at an average of $1033. An Australian buyer, Mr W. Almond (New South Wales), paid the top price of $2OOO for a female offered by the Levels Farming Company, Ltd.
The same company sold two other females for $l3OO and $l2OO and Guthrey Holdings. Ltd, had sales at $BOO and $6OO (twice). Other bull sales included:— Mrs J. C. Hall (Horarata). 1 at $2100; C. J. and Sons (Alexandra). 1 at $1700; B. R. Barclay (Leeston), 1 at $2400; W.' J. Harwood (Rangiora), 1 at $2100; Rlverslea Farm (Waimate), 1 at $1100; Guthrey Holdings, Ltd (Amberley), 3 at $l3OO, $lOOO and $1000; R. J. Clucas (Hororata). 1 at $2400.
