Deep sea fishing

The abundant. fishing grounds off the West Coast support a strong export market. The Westfleet Fishermen's Co-operative, Ltd, which works out of Greymouth is now gearing itself for the tuna season. Established in June, last year, the co-operative exports to Australia, the United States of America and Japan. During the tuna season, which has just begun and runs until mid-September, between 60 and 70 fishing boats work out of the port. About half the export order is for bluefin tuna. The average weight for this type of tuna is about 100 kg.
