Twin sisters prop scrum

It is not unknown for a girl to appear in a junior rugby team on Saturday mornings. However, it must be very rare to find two girls toiling in the front row of an otherwise male scrum. In the New Brighton D team playing in section IV of the eighteenth grade, twin sisters. Charlene and Nicola Pouaka, prop the scrum. They must be doing a good job Bbp team has lost only one match and most of its wins’ have been convincing. Other players to stand out in the side are' the promising Kelvin Haereora and Joss Faatili, along with the half-back, Joel Stanley. Two other sides in section IV of the eighteenth' grade. Hornby and Marist. clashed on Saturday. The small Hornbv side was outgunned on the day. and it may perhaps be playing out of its depth, although there is only one section below it. For Hornby. Derek Stewart and Zachanah Miller, m his first year, are promising players while Raymond Coffee is a great trier. The half-back. Simon Crowe, has had only three games in his brief career but he is coming along well. In the Marist side. John Bruce has passed the 100 point mark this season. John Callaghan is rated a "little tiger" and Michael Wood is "into everything." as is Marcus Doig. In ' the coach's opinion, if all the boys "went as a team." they could’ be a good side. Linwood E in section V of the eighteenth grade features the talents of Kerryn McDonald, a points centurion already this season. Francis Borell and Richard Harper. Greg Searle and Nicolas Dumburgue are playing well and Baden Caddie is also promising. Simon Harding and Stuart Clarke give huge efforts as does Scott Townsend, a prop. Two other fourteenth grade sides, Medbury and Burnside, met at North Hagley Park on Saturday. For Medbury. John Kerr and Mark Pitts are good loose forwards while Guv March is performing well at half-back. Stephen Piper gives his all and Michael Pritchard wins good, clean line-out ball. In the Burnside team, the first five-eighths. Peter Ryan, shows promise as does Michael Cook further out. The pick of the forwards are Paul Thomas, a prop, and Craig Burrowes. The most improved player in the team is the half-back'Rich-ard Mills, and Jason Sims is a great trier as is Andrew Sparks, who is hooking well. ■ Hornby A in the eighteenthgrade features Patrick Boudine. Gareth Stiven. Troy Pukura and Philip Presnell, all'of whom ■ are promising players. The smallest boys in the side. Tahu Hunter and Brent Carson, perhaps work the hardest. In a tenth grade match. Old Boys met Suburbs, which has lost only one game this season. For Old Boys, Jeremy Stewart, Paddy Quinli’van, a small, fiery flanker, and Tony Allen, the fullback. are looking good. Craig Lambie and Craig McMahon, a flanker turned half-back, are great battlers. For Suburbs. Michael Christie and Scott Smith, the captain, are performing well in the backs.

David Arscott. a lock, has shown a rapid improvement this season, his third in the sport. In a seventeenth grade match. Burnside met Sydenham. For Burnside, the first five-eighths. Hamish Moffat, and Simon Cook, a prop, are playing well. Another prop. Matthew Drury, has newly returned to the fray after breaking an arm. Andrew Lamont is handling a high work rate in the forwards. For Sydenham, the first fiveeighths. Nicolas Tait, is showing promise as is Wayne Chapman in the forwards. Brent Nabbs is the smallest boy in the team but he makes his presence felt. Improv-' ing steadily are Danny Clancy. Mark Sutton. Geoffrey'Thin, the half-back, and Stephen Fleming. Fleming is rated one of the best tacklers in the side. Next week-end. MerivalePapanui junior rugby players will have a busy time' with two days of action to help celebrate the club’s centennial. On Saturday, the club's fourteen junior teams are all playing at the club’s home ground. Nunweek Park, mainly against Sydenham sides, the games to be plaved between 10 a.m. and noon. On the Sunday, games will be played among teams selected from within the club. In the afternoon, each boy will receive a certificate, a pennant and a badge, the presentations to be made by a current All Black.
