Calculator allowed in S.C. exams
PA Wellington Calculators will be allowed in the School Certificate mathematics and science examinations for the first time next year — which is just as well because the traditional slide rule is hard to buy. The.demand for slide rules in secondary school mathematics has dwindled to the extent that many school suppliers no longer stock them. Calculators have been permitted in everyday classroom mathematics in secondary schools for several years, and a recent Education Department survey showed that 90 per cent of school pupils owned one. Last year. University Entrance applied mathematics candidates were allowed to use calculators in an examination for the first time. The School Certificate Examination Board's chairman, Mr James Ross, said that the introduction of calculators into examinations was a matter of keeping up with the times. '
