F.O.L. wary of support for C.E.R.
PA Wellington The Federation of Labour did not support Closer Economic Relations with Australia yet, and did not consider it represented any solution to New Zealand's economic problems, said the federation yesterday. Four aspects of’the proposal concerned it. the F.O.L. said: • The stated commitment to free trade, which was an ideological stance at variance with the reality of international trade. • The fact that the Government had presented the people of New Zealand with an accomplished fact in C.E.R. "It is improbable that any major change can now be’ made to the agreement, and this cavalier disregard for public opinion is scarcely the way to win support for the concept."
• The likely-effect upon unemployment as New Zealand industries adjusted to closer economic ties.
• The apparent intention to rationalise the New Zealand
economy along Tasman requirements. which might not serve the best interest of workers. The federation said it noted that talks on closer ties were to continue until July 30. and it would encourage its affiliates to participate in the discussions and would reflect the opinions of its affiliated unions in formal submissions to the Secretary of Trade and Industry.
The F.O.L. also notes the safeguard provisions in C.E.R. and the intentions to have a five-year review. The F.O.L. will closely monitor the progress of C.E.R. over its duration and use these provisions if necessary.
“Affiliated unions will be asked to put more effort into the ongoing work on industry plans and link this with the developments of a trade union alternative economic policy.
“The F.O.L. intends to hold discussions with the Australian Council of Trade Unions on C.E.R. to work out a common approach."
