New Strait power line ‘justified’

PA Dunedin The cost of another power cable across Cook Strait would be justified a year from now, according to the Minister of Works and Development (Mr Quigley). It is thought the 1982 Energy Plan provides for the extra cable as. a possibility in 1984. Mr Quigley would not confirm this, but he said that an extra cable was not being considered “at the moment.” The Energy Plan will not be published until it is tabled in Parliament by the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch). Mr Quigley said that the cost of an extra cable became justified by 1993-94, based on what it would cost compared with further thermal power production from, the North Island.
