Video game held to be gambling machine
PA Wellington The Internal Affairs Department has advised an Auckland manufacturer that its video game is a gambling machine. Video 2000 N.Z., Ltd. has been told that the operation of the machine involves a game of chance, and if played with a view to winning money, goods, or vouchers for goods, would be an illegal game of chance. However, provided the device was not used for winning money, it could be regarded as an amusement device, said the department. Under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1977, it is an offence to participate in an illegal game of chance, and any person who organises, promotes, manages, or conducts such a game also commits an offence. Similar machines are already in use in some Auckland clubs. At the Marist Rugby Club, patrons can choose from four machines, which are enjoying special popularity. When'; a player scores sufficient points, the secretary-mana-;; ger of the club, Mr "L. Hewitt, gives the winner a voucher. Mr Hewitt said that they were petrol vouchers, but he would vary the prizes.
