‘A feast of visual delights’
Retrospective exhibition: Paintings by Philip Trustturn, at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, until June 17. Reviewed by David Brokenshire. Philip Trusttum has been paid a significant honour by the Sarjeant Gallery arranging this exhibition and having it shown throughout New Zealand. It is an honour for Mr Trusttum. but what a feast of visual delights able to be shared by the whole country. Work is shown from 1962 to 1979 and illustrates the development over this period. In a sense it is also a very personal diary. We are able to see the artist’s response to his periods of
study in Australia. Europe, and the United States. Some of the influences, enthusiasms. and joys of his daily life are made apparent. However, it’is the fury in paint, the sensuous colour, and the range of forms which will astonish all viewers. In general the scale of the works is large but it is the generosity of spirit of the artist which will overwhelm. The show is accompanied by a most handsome catalogue with excellent colour reproductions which will last as a vibrant remembrancer. This exhibition is one of the most important to tour NewZealand and should not be missed by anyone who is moved by colour.
