S.P.C.A. opposed to live sheep export

The. Society for the PreventionWf Cruelty to Animals has spoken out against suggestions that New Zealand export live sheep for slaughter. Commenting on a call by farmers to reintroduce the export of live sheep to the Middle East, the society’s' president, Mr Neil Wells, said the society would not relax its opposition to the trade, which has been prohibited for the last 10 years. The society’s opposition was based on the risks involved in long-distance shipping of large numbers of animals through the tropics, and “the dubious handling and slaughtering methods

which are. commonplace in ’ many Micidle' East countries.” ? ■■ 7 ■' ■■ Mr Wells said that any animal, raised for food should be totally processed in New Zealand to ensure that handling and slaughtering techniques were humane. “Even with the modern stock transport ships which are available, shipping is still hazardous,” he said. “In the event of storms or even long shipping delays, many animals perish. A stock ship which caught fire south of Australia a few years ago resulted in the entire shipment of about 35,000 sheep drowning, or being burnt to death."
