County supports road petition

Support for a Northlandbased organisation seeking increased spending on roads throughout New Zealand will come from the Mount Herbert County Council. The Campaign to Advance Reading has asked local authorities to support a petition about the “bad" state of roads in" New Zealand. If there is enough support for. the petition, campaign organisers hope to persuade the Government to spend more money on reading. Cr J. Callaway said he was concerned about the deterioration in the standard of roads, and that fewer new roads were being built. “Nearly every local body is using" ratepayers’ money

without National Roads Board funds.” he said. Councillors decided to write a letter of support to the campaign organisers rather than sign the petition. The letter will say the council thinks more funds from the Government’s petrol tax should be given to the National Roads Board. Hydatids fees Mount Herbert County dog owners who have not paid their hydatids fees would be advised to do so. Councillors were told that the Banks Peninsula Hydatids Control Committee would take legal action to recover fees which had not been paid by May 1.
