Canty Games reps benefit
Three Canterbury Games representatives, Craig Adair, Neroli Fairhall and Ann Shurrock, have benefited from the latest list of grants announced by the New Zealand Sports Foundation.' Adair, aged 19, has been chosen to ride the 1000 m time trial at the Brisbane Games in October. He has received a developmental grant from- the foundation for $3750. Of that, $3OOO will assist his training and the remainder is an equipment allowance. The. foundation has made an additional grant which will also assist Adair. It has. made available $750 to enable his coach, Mr Wayne Thorpe, of Christchurch, to accompany him to Brisbane: Miss Fairhall and ■ Mrs Shurrock, both high ranking archers in the Commonwealth, have each beem given an additional ,$lOOO/ The money will allow- the pair to attend -an international competition in, China and Japan. They left this week on the tour. Miss Fairhall has also received an equipment grant of $550. ■ . The grants announced yesterday to 26 athletes and two coaches total $63,305, bringing the total of grants .since, the foundation’s inception to $1,102,916. Competitiors in canoeing, marathon swimming, roller skating, rowing, snooker, triathlon, yachting and . weightlifting are other sports to
receive assistance in the latest grants. Dene O'Kane, the brilliant young Auckland snooker player, who set an unofficial New Zealand record break of 135 last week, has been given a $5OOO developmental grant for the next year. It is his second. Triathlon is a .new sport to New Zealanders, but this country’s foremost competitor, Richard Faulding, is the recipient of a special grant of $l5OO. It will enable him to compete .in the world ironman triathlon championship in Hawaii in September. The event involves, in order, a 2.4 mile ocean swim, -a 112-mile bicycle ride and a full marathon, all run without a rest. . Four canoeists and a coach have been granted $14,000 to prepare for the world championships in Belgrade, next month. Alan Thompson (Gisborne) receives $5000; Paul McDonald (Auckland), $3000; Peter Duncan (Gisborne) $2000; arid lan Ferguson (Auckland) $2OOO. The team’s coach, Benny Hutchings (Gisborne), receives a coaching grant of $2OOO. Rowing’s premier crew, the eight,, and its coach, Harry Mahon, have received $15,555. The finance will be used in the crew's 14-week build-up to the world championships in Munich in August. Mahon’s grant is for $2OBO. The. crew — Barrie Mabbott, Les O’Connell, Mike Stanley, Andrew Stevenson, George Keys, Roger White-Parsons, Chris White, Tony Brook and Dave Rodger — each receive $1375, arid the coxswain, Andrew Hay, $llOO. Phillip Rush, the winner of the Australian marathon swimming championship recently, has received a further grant of $4OOO. It will enable him to train for the world championship at Santa Catalina Island and' Long Beach Island on July 4. Rush will also swim in the Magnetic Island to Townsville race on June 6, and the Commonwealth Games Brisbane marathon on September 19. John Callaghan, of Nelson, has received an additional grant of $2OO to assist with the cost of meals and accommodation during a period at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
