The Falklands

Sir,-Sandra M. Legge (May 27) poses the usual rhetorical question, answers it herself, then attributes certain attitudes to others when in fact she has no evidence that anyone thinks, as she claims that they do. Her fear and dislike of nuclear weapons is understandable, though she does share with Alexander Haig one idiosyncrasy at least. The massacre of the English language. "Attitudinal changes” indeed! About the only “mutant change” we can expect or

anticipate from a nuclear war, would be, I think; the transmogrification of flesh to charcoal. Who would be afraid of the atomic bomb in the hands of St Francis of Assisi? Maybe it is people we need fear, rather than the instruments that they use. Banning the bomb will not stop its, manufacture or use. Changing the hearts and minds of men might. In this Sandra and I agree—Yours, etc., J. V. PIERSON. May 27, 1982.
