Pope to hold Mass for peace
NZPA London The head of the Catholic Church in Britain, Cardinal Basil Hume, was due to fly to Rome late yesterday to pray for peace in the Falklands, and make a final bid to persuade the Pope not to cancel his visit to Britain. The Pope yesterday asked British and Argentine cardinals to join him today in a special Mass for peace in the South Atlantic. News of the Mass was greeted with optimism in British Roman Catholic circles as a sign that the historic visit would go ahead after all. The two British archbishops already in Rome to urge the Pope to come to Britain were also still hopeful that the long-awaited papal visit could be saved. Archbishops Derek Worlock of Liverpool and Thomas Winning of Glasgow met the Vatican Secretry of State, Cardinal Casaroli, for talks yesterday. Later Archbishop Worlock said: “The Holy Father made it clear he wants to come to Britain. “There are difficulties, but everyone is trying to find ways to overcome them.” A Church spokesman announcing the Pope’s new initiative of prayer for peace said he had issued an “urgent and personal request” to the British and Argentine cardinals to join him in offering the Mass.
The Argentinian cardinals are Raul Francisco Primatesta, Juan Carlos Aramburu, and Edurardo Pironio, who is resident in Rome. The British Cardinals are Cardinal Gordon Gray, and Cardinal Hume,, who said yesterday: “It is most important that we continue to pray for the present crisis to be resolved with justice and without further bloodshed. “I will continue to urge the Pope to undertake his pastoral visit to Britain next week as planned. “I know he is trying very hard both to remove the obstacles which might hinder his journey, and to make his visit possible. “If the conflict worsens seriously it could endanger his plans.” <• Cardinal Hume is expected to return to Britain tomorrow. It is thought most unlikely a decision about the papal visit will be made while he is in Rome. An announcement is more likely at the weekend.
