Freeze on property
NZPA Reuter Buenos Aires
Argentina yesterday banned the sale or transfer of British property in the country, the official news agency, Telam, said. The Economy Minister (Mr Roberto Alemann) told reporters the measure was “symmetrical to that taken by Britain (on Argentinian assets), but wider.” He said it did not mean a freeze on funds, but a freeze on property to avoid a drain of assets.
Britain froze Argentinian assets in the country estimated at SUSI. 4 billion the day after Argentina seized the Falkland Islands on April 2. Telam said the Argentinian ban would apply to all property belonging to Britain, to British citizens who were not permanent residents, in Argentina and to other nationals residing in Britain.
It said the ban applied to sales of property and to contracts which would mean lessening patrimonies or productive, capacity of companies or transfering property abroad.
