Frigate to make last patrol
PA Wellington The frigate Taranaki will leave Devonport on Sunday for her last patrol, and it will include an exercise with the American nuclear cruiser Truxtun. The Navy will decommission her after her patrol. She will exercise with the Truxtun off the coast on Sunday and Monday. The Truxtun is due at Wellington on Tuesday morning. The Taranaki will visit Nelson and, on Queen’s Birthday week-end, Wellington.
The Taranaki’s decommissioning is in anticipation of the arrival of the recently bought H.M.S. Bacchante, originally due for delivery later this year. Bacchante and Dido, the other ship bought from the British in a SIOOM deal last year, are now invoked in the Falklands task force and back-up. The Taranaki was commissioned in 1961. In 1978-79 she was refitted and given fishery resources protection and training roles.
