Thriller Dee chosen for Rowe Cup

Special correspondent

Auckland

In what must be the most open Rowe Cup for years, Thriller Dee may give the country’s leading driver, Peter Wolfenden, his sixth win in the North Island’s premier race for trotters at Alexandra Park tomorrow night.

Thriller Dee is among the five front-markers who will start from the second row. Another is Stevie Prestige, unbeaten in two races since he returned from an Australian campaign. Not many tight-class trotters have raced so consistently well as Thriller Dee has done this season. When she finished third in the White Star Free-for-all on the first night of the Rowe Cup meeting last Saturday. she took her score to five wins, two seconds, one

third and two fourths from 13 attempts. In one of her wins, at Alexandra Park on April 23, she broke the track record for 2700 m from a standing start. There is little doubt she would have run Sir Castleton and Jenner much closer in the White Star Free-for-all if Wolfenden had been able to work her clear sooner. Wolfenden’s first Rowe Cup win was back in 1960 with Jewel Derby. The others were with Single Cash in

1968 and 1969. Framalda (1977) and Special Pride (1980). After Thriller Dee. the best of the northern candidates appear to be Cal Brydon. Jenner and that dogged stayer, Stormy Morn. About now appeals most of the South Island contingent, although Sir Castleton and McShane are bound to have big followings, as well. About Now undoubtedly is the best-trotting mare'in'the south with a string of fine performances to her credit this season.

She displayed her class on the second night of the meeting on Wednesday when, off 20m, she was the closest of thirds to Cal Brydon and Mini's Pride. Sir Castleton showed by a dashing win in the 2200 m White Star Free-for-all his poor form in his previous two races was all wrong. The half-brother to the 1975 Interdominion champion, Castleton’s Pride finished very determinedly and should not be troubled by the 3200 m tomorrow.
