Canty judo successes
Canterbury players won three titles at the New Zealand junior and intermediate judo championships in Hamilton. The successful cbmpetitors were Antionia W ? ong (girls under 50kg), Craig Collins (intermediate boys under 50kg) and Michael Graham (intermediate boys under 60kg). Collins and Antionia W'ong are both members of the Cobberkwai club, and Graham is from Kaiapoi. For the two boys the titles came after a long, run of minor placings. Other Canterbury competi-
tors to gain medals were:— Silver; Anthony Tihore (Cobberkwai, boys under 25kg): Glen Archer (Cobberkwai, intermediate boys under 55kg); Martin Oetgen (Cobberkwai, intermediate boys over 65kg): Susan Hawkey (Cam-Am-Ju, girls under 30kg). Bronze: Matthew’ Chant (Cobberkwai, boys under 40kg); Shane Roffey (Cobberkwai, boys under 55kg); John Rawiri‘(Cobberkwai, intermediate boys under 55kg); Martin Oetgen (open); Mark Muir (Cam-Am-Ju, intermediate boys uner 65kg). The Canterbury team beat
Auckland in the teams’ event, and North won the inter-island contest. Mr Peter Miles, a referee throughout the tournament, considered the classic fight was that between Canter-, bury's Mark Muir and the open intermediate winner, Nigel Anmss (North Wellington), in the teams' event. Muir brought off a splendidly executed foot sweep to take an Ippon (10 points) and the fight. Christchurch w’ill be the venue of the national senior championships, at Queen's Birthday week-end.
