Colts strike back

After a surprise defeat in the first round, the Canterbury colts hockey team struck back with a vengeance yesterday when it beat Northland, 5-0, in the national tournament at Napier.

In its first match, Canterbury was stung early when Taranaki scored from penalty corners in the fifth and sixth minutes. An individual effort by John Radonovich, who netted a field goal, kept Canterbury in the match, but Taranaki increased its lead to 3-1 in the second half, again through a penalty corner. Canterbury scored a goal by Jeff McEwen in the final minutes, but it had left its run too late. Canterbury's

defence was poor and the trapping and passing erratic. However, in the second match against Northland, Canterbury was a different story. The players worked harder, passed more accurately, and positioned themselves better. The centre forward, Simon Willocks, opened the scoring from a rebound and Chris Leslie added another soon after to give Canterbury the lead at half-time, 2-0. Canterbury controlled the second spell and goals were scored by Radonovich, Aden Carter and Don McKenzie. Canterbury meets Wanganui today and Otago tomorrow. Victories in those games should enable the side to qualify for the semi-finals.
