‘Ratting’ on promise?
PA Wellington The Government’s announcement that National Superannuation will be paid only by direct crediting from September 1 breaks a promise made in 1975. according to Mr G. W. R. Palmer (LabChristchurch Central) and Mr Peter Neilson (LabMiramar). The two members of Parliament said that a 1975 National Party pamphlet on superannuation noted that. "You. not some bureaucrat.
will choose the method of payment that suits you — voucher book, cheque, or direct credit to bank account.” The announcement by the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Young) on direct crediting was "another ratting by the National Party on its promises," said ’ Messrs Palmer and Neilson. This change to National Superannuation came barely two months after the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) said
that any Government changes would not be announced until Budget night, they said.
“On that occasion Mr Muldoon repeated that all National’s promises and commitments on superannuation would be kept and adhered to," they said.
"National superannuitants have been probably the most frequently betrayed group of New Zealanders under this Government."
