Extra leave still issue
The Labourers' Union intends to pursue its claim of three extra days annual leave over the . Christmas holiday period for its members on the Christchurch City Council staff. "The assessors have made it quite clear that they intend to pursue it at conciliation next year,” said the South Island area secretary. Mr W. B. Brown) last evening.
After conciliation talks between the two parties, which took all yesterday, the union decided to accept the. council’s offer of one extra day. plus . increases in disability payments and junior rates percentages.
“We are • not happy, but under the circumstances that was as far as we could go to achieve a settlement," said Mr Brown.
The disability payment, an amalgamation of previous allowances which came into force last year, has been increased to $1.50 a day, and the union, received a 5 per cent increase in percentage figures paid' to junior workers employed by the council.
Bexley tip workers went on strike in support of the claim last month, and other union workers, employed by the council, instituted ah overtime ban.
