Special correspondent The Southland runner, Derek Turnbull, broke a world record for his agegroup in the 800 m when the first Oceanic veteran athletic championships began at the National Stadium in suva yesterday. Turnbull, competing in the M 55 age-group, ran the 800 m in the very smart time of 2min 06.65. Canterbury athletes performed well on the opening day and among the highlights was the winning hammer throw of 28.18 m by Norman Hawke (M7O). Hawke also

won the javelin with a throw of 32.74 m. Other Canterbury athletes to be placed in finals were:— Charlie Bishop, M5O hammer, 21m. second; Barry Chant, M 45 800 m, 2min 14.85, third; Ray McLean, M 45 10,000 m, 35min 445, second; Shirley Peterson, W5O 100 m, 14.15,

second; Annette Horsnell, W4O 100 m, 13.55, second; and Vai Hood, W4O 100 m, 16s, third. Three Canterbury sprinters won their 100 m heats, Bruce McPhail (M 45 Bishop (M5O), and Robert Auitmatagi (M4O), recording times of 11.75, 14.55, and 11.4 s respectively.
