N.Z. frigate on good-will tour
NZPA staff correspondent Hong Kong H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury, suggested as a possible New Zealand contribution to the British task force near the Falkland Islands, is due td> make good-will visits to Hong Kong and Manila this month. The Canterbury, accompanied by the destroyer escort H.M.A.S. Brisbane, is due to reach Hong Kong on May 15 after taking part in Exercise Rimpac off Hawaii. Her arrival at Hong Kong will be one day later than originally scheduled, and the delay — which caused the rescheduling of cocktail functions planned on both the Canterbury and Brisbane —
is believed to be because of fuel-saving measures, requiring a slower cruising speed. After visiting Manila, the Canterbury is expected to go to Singapore for a fivePower maritime defence exercise called Starfish. The exercise, to take place in the South China Sea early next month, is planned to involve ships from the British, Australian, New Zealand, Malaysian, and Singaporean navies. Details of Starfish have yet to be announced, but it is believed that before the Falklands crisis Britain, which last year was represented by two coastal minesweepers from Hong. Kong, had been intending to play a fuller role.
