Aid to teachers

Sir,—l am appalled to hear that the Minister of Education is even considering putting our future teachers on the tertiary assistance grant received by

university students. Is teaching to become an elitist profession available only to the rich? It used to be an accepted fact that teachers should come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures. How is this to happen if only those who can support themselves to a large extent can afford to enter our teachers colleges? I find it hard to believe that the general public have so little concern for the education which their children and grandchildren will receive that they will allow this to happen. Have we given up on education?— Yours, etc., ALISON TAYLOR. May 6, 1982.
