Govt will pay P.M.’s costs
Auckland The taxpayer will meet the "very .substantial” amount it cost the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) to defend himself against defamation charges pursued by a -Dairy Flat pensioner, - Mr Ambfdse Tindal, in the High Court. Mr;, Muldoon applied for his costs to be met by Mr Tifidal, but the application was-declined by Mr Justice Sp'eight yesterday. After the application was heard in chambers, Mr Mui-
doon’s counsel, Mr J. D. Dalgety, said his Honour had regarded the hearing as a “special case.” Mr Dalgety said Mr Muldoon’s involvement, in the case was in his capacity as Prime Minister and as a result the Government would pay the costs. The costs involved in the case, and his preparation for it, would be “very substantial.” The nine-day hearing ended at 11 p.m. on Thursday when the jury found against Mr Tindal. , .
