Board concern over effluent
Affluent discharged into Lyttelton Harbour is a coritimting* .cause of concern to th&North Canterbury CatchmohUgoard. gqard approval was given yesterday to a water right application by the Lyttelton Harbour Board to discharge BO cubic metres of "wasjrmown” water daily through an existing outfall at TejAwaparahi Bay. or=B. P. J. Molloy said thak’Sbme board members were* “worried about the amounts of. effluent discharged into the harbour. The latest right was for a small amount but there were sonje “ "unsatisfactory aspects.”’.. the,‘board’s chairman, Mr M.£l, 0. Dixon, said that the four-year right was a temporary; measure. The Lyttelton Borough Council, which wqs also “tipping things into the/ harbour,” was due to report on its plans for a sewage-treatment plant.
“We will have to keep the pressure on,” Mr Dixon said. Conditions of approval for the Harbour Board right included monitoring the level of toxic materials in the effluent. The board’s resource investigations manager, Mr M. J. Bowden, said that the council report would determine whether any further applications to discharge effluent were granted. Tribute Board members paid tribute to a former colleague, Mr T. Double, who died on April 12, aged 71. Mr Dixon praised the energy and loyalty of Mr Double who served 11 years On the board. Mr P. Sheehan will replace Mr Double as chairman of the administration committee. and Mr Dixon was elected to represent the board on the Canterbury United Council regional planning committee.
