Officials welcome plea over Games

The chairman of the Games Foundation. Sir Edward Williams, and the general manager, Dan Whitehead. fly to London this week-end’ to address an emergency meeting of the Commonwealth Games countries tn a bid to head off the boycott. in London on Friday Mr Ramphal said he had written
to all Commonwealth leaders urging them to support the 560 million Brisbane Games starting on September 30.
The black African nations are protesting against NewZealand’s participation in Brisbane after the New Zealand Rugby Union invited a South African team to tour last year. Mr Whitehead said the boycott threat was hurting ticket sales to the Games, with sales dropping off considerably in the last six weeks.
More than $4 million worth of tickets have been sold so far but the organisers are budgeting for a minimum of $6 million.
