Hikers’ packs left at motel
Perhaps suffering from a twinge of conscience, the man who drove off with the packs of two overseas hitchhikers on Wednesday, has left them at a Redwood motel. The hitch-hikers. Donald Schermetzler. of Wisconsin. United States, and Steven Schroeter. of England, were delighted yesterday to recover the packs, which contained personal papers and most of their belongings. Mr Schermetzler and Mr Schroeter had met "on the road” on Wednesday when they were given a ride north from the Waitaki River by a man driving a bottle-green Vauxhall Cresta. All three went into the Chertsey Tavern for a beer, but the man excused himself, saying he was going outside to look for a friend, and drove off with his passengers' packs. The police are making inquiries to find the driver, who called himself “Ash” and was about 172 cm (sft Bin) tall, with blond hair and a droopy moustache. He booked into a Redwood motel unit for two nights and checked out yesterday morning, leaving the packs behind.
