Recycling of waste
< Parliamentary reporter The Government was seeking a satisfactory freight rate north for Christchurch bulk recyclable waste materials and paper, said the acting Minister of Trade and Industry (Mr Quigley) yesterday. He was answering a question in the House by Mrs Mary Batchelor (Lab., Avon). The Trade and Industry Department was discussing suitable freight arrangements with the Railways Corporation. Mr Quigley said. Small export markets
existed in the Pacific Islands for newspaper for wrapping purposes. and the Christchurch City Council had been told of" this. New Zealand trade commissioners in the Pacific were invest!- * gating it further. Asked what the Government w r as doing to help set up local inexpensive recycling industries in the South Island. Mr Quigley said six cash grants were made last year under the resource recovery grants scheme. The Trade and Industry Department convened regular meetings of South Island
local authorities, recycling industries, departments, and transport interests, and had planned one for Christchurch next month. It also provided information on recycling through published research papers, replies to direct requests, and a newsletter published three times a year. It ran a waste materials exchange service in New Zealand,"and sent staff member's to discuss waste problems and recycling alternatives with local authorities and industries.' Mr Quigley said.
