Dispute blamed for generator delay
PA Auckland , The first of the 250 megawatt generating units at the Huntly power station was now unlikely to be commissioned in time for peak winter electricity demand, said the Electricity Department’s site project engineer, Mr T. Lusk, yesterday. A dispute between 69 boilermakers and the main private contractor employing them, Cers, Ltd, is holding up work crucial to the commissioning of the first generating unit. It is estimated that the rebuilding of pipes on the unit will take two weeks.
Boilermakirig is a fundamental activity on the job because of the welding involved. “This is essential work,” said Mr Lusk. “It must be completed otherwise nothing can be generated.” The dispute began over the hiring by Cers of a boilermaker said by union members on the job not to be qualified, for reasons of length of union membership, to start work. The Cers superintendent of Huntly, Mr G. Vazey, said that no boilermaker reported for work yesterday after being turned away on Wednesday.
