Six charges in court-martial
A Royal New Zealand Air Force sergeant pleaded not guilty to six charges when he appeared before a district court-martial at Burnham Military Camp yesterday. Sergeant K. McGowan, an instructor at the Royal New Zealand Army Medical Corps School, faces five charges of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline, and one of disgraceful conduct of an indecent kind. The charges relate to complaints by two female soldiers who were students of McGowan in December when the offences were alleged to have been committed.
Both the complainants' names were supressed, but McGowan was refused suppression of his name by the court. The president of the court is Major P. L. Hols, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, and the members are Major S. G. Stubbs, Royal New Zealand Corps of Transport, and Captain C. H. Webster, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. The Judge-Advocate is Mr P. G: S. Penlington, Q.C., of Christchurch. McGowan is represented by Mr M. J. Glue. The court-martial will resume this morning.
