Footpath obstruction
Sir,—lt seems ironical that city councillors should be worried about your "paper” boxes on the footpaths. It makes me laugh. I have been fighting for over three years to get the footpath at the back of Woolworths in Beresford Street, New Brighton, cleared of crates, pallets and drums. I have had the health department down regarding the drums of stinking meat “offcuts” left on the footpath. They came down, took photographs and measurements, etc., and yet the same thing is happening. Woolworths employees use the footpath to unload, trucks. Women with children and prams and also the elderly have to walk out on to the road to get past. It appears that the council .is gutless when enforcing by-laws, so I would not worry about your boxes on the footpath. I am sure they will still be there in the years to come as long as the “few” remember to put in their 20c. — Yours, etc., G. DAVIDSON. March 5,'1982.
[Mr J. H. Gray, General Manager and Town Clerk, replies: “During 1980 representations were made to this company regarding goods being left on the public footpath; subsequently this practice ceased. Your correspondent's present comments are' noted and arrangements have been made for further checks Of this area by the city health department. It is normal practice to issue warnings to offenders in
respect to breaches of the city by-laws before taking formal legal action. Delivery of goods to commercial premises is acceptable provided they do not remain on the footpath any longer than to effect delivery.”]
