Farmers’ S.M.P.s

Sir.-One sentence in your leading article.." The bind over beef" (March 13) puts the whole problem facing meatproducing farmers in a nutshell. That sentence was. "Il costs three times as much to get a cattle beast killed in New Zealand as it does in Australia." Coupled with that fact lamb killing charges have increased over the last five years at the rate of 23 per cent per annum. As farmers, unlike industry. cannot pass on these charges, no wonder they are complaining. The buying public in New Zealand does not seem to realise that anything they buy that is manufactured in New Zealand is heavily subsidised. either by import control. import duties, or both, so much so that many consumer articles cost anything from twice to three times as much as overseas. These subsidies, and export incentive tax relief, seem to be accepted, yet there is a storm of protest if any mention is made of a payment to farmers. Unless something is done to alleviate farmers' costs we will not have a meat industry, by the end of this decade. - Yours, etc.. F. R DAMSON. March 19. 1982.
