Cheviot candidates trial stylishly at Addington

By

PAUL MEIN

Thurber Globe and Travel King, candidates for T.A.B. double legs at the Cheviot meeting on Saturday, were stylish winners of their respective heats at the Addington barrier trials yesterday. Thurber Globe won only narrowly, beating Sun Seeker by a nose, but it was a run which vaults him into contention for the 3200 m Cheviot Cup on Saturday. Thurber Globe settled five places back, towards the rear of the field on the outer, ranged up wide to get nearer the leaders on the turn and finished best to beat Sun Seeker and the pacemaker, Panair, in 3 min 28.55, the final 800 m in 61s.

El Regale, which pulled hard three back on the inner, plugged on when clear for fourth, with Nada Hanover fifth. Scotch Tar’s preparation for the Easter meeting at Addington continued on a highly promising note when the eight-year-old won the feature heat for trotters. Starting from 40m, Scotch Tar was a shade slow, but he improved three wide to sit without cover from the 1100 m. Slim Dykman sent the gelding to the front 600 m out, a position he clung to, though About Now, which tracked him throughout came strongly over the final 50m. Game Captain came solidly for third, with Sure Court fourth. Hobart Star set a leisurely pace throughout and sprinted his last 800 m in 59.6 s to win the three-year-old heat by a length and a quarter from Noble Jo and Ansett. Ansett, preparing for the D.B. Fillies heat at Forbury, lost few friends for her assignment. ,The Transport Chip filly trailed three places back and, like the first two home, was never seriously pushed over the final stages, though Hobart Star went his final 400 m in 29.15.

Travel King, a favoured candidate for the Service Transport Handicap, second leg of the Cheviot Trotting Club’s T.A.B. double was an impressive winner of C 3 and C 4 trial. A close second to Winter Chase last start, Travel King sat without cover yesterday but had reserves aplenty to keep Micawave and Regal Glow out comfortably enough in 3 min 31.25. the final 800 m in 61.1 s and last 400 m in 30.75. Governor’s Lady, which will start from No’. 4 in the Cheviot Cup never saw daylight in Travel King's heat

and finished at the rear but full of running. Win a Bottle, Sonn Adios and a Leonard Memorial candidate, Gateau, were winners of the three heats for youngsters. Win a Bottle flew home from the rear to beat Harvest Gold in the first heat in 2 min 44.45, the final 800 m in 59.55. Harvest Gold was eliminated from the Leonard Memorial on Saturday. ■ Sonn Adios, a free-legged El Patron two-year-old, led virtually throughout to beat Nostradamus in the second heat, the fastest of the three, in 2 min 43.85.

Gateau, one of the favourites for the Leonard Memorial led for the last 1600 m to win the third trial in 2 min 45s beating Timely Win and Toliver Twiggy. Kind Nature, which last raced at the Cheviot meeting a year ago, showed himself well forward to resume, winning the C2 pacers’ heat. Sent to the front 1800 m from home, Kind Nature was too strong over the concluding stages, winning by a length in 3 min 33.25, the final 800 m in 62.45, the last 400 m in 325. Royal Skipper, which rushed up three wide to get handier with a round to go held second gamely, with Any Time Now making ground well for third. Agrinion showed how unlucky she was to be on the ballot list for the three-year-old fillies race at Cheviot, easily winning the second maiden heat. Fifth behind Hilarious Guest, Tact Boyden and company at Addington last start. Agrinion is third right of reentry for the Waipara Handicap on Saturday. The Boyden Hanover filly trailed throughout yesterday but finished solidly to beat Doormouse by a widening three-quarters of a length in 3 min 31.95, the final 800 m in 64.35. Four Ply went a solid trial for the Cheviot Handicap with a fast-finishing win in the minor trotters’ heat. The Scotch Abbe five-year-old won going away by half a length in 3 min 37.65, to beat Falcon Lass and Norice Wave. Dandy Blue came fast from a trailing position to win the first maiden heat in 3 min-32.25, a length and a half in front of Tiger Tryax. which stormed home from near the rear. Lassiter also made ground strongly for third. Netherby Gee. an in-form race rival of Four Ply. showed courage to hold out

Spangled Pride and win the second CO and Cl heat for trotters.

He led virtually throughout and stuck on best to narrowly beat Spangled Pride by a head, the time a casual 3min 46.45. Tar Spirit held third, but was four and a half lengths away.
